Push and pull traffic
There are two main types of website traffic: traffic you push to your site explicitly, and traffic you hope to pull off the search engines.
For instance, when you tell a person about your website and tell them to visit it, you are pushing that person to your website. When a person finds your website through a search engine like Google and then decides to visit it, you have effectively pulled that person onto your site.
It is most effective to put efforts into increasing both types of traffic simultaneously.
Here are some easy tactics you can follow to push more traffic to your website:
- Talk. Use your voice to tell people about your website.. Ask them to visit your site when you are speaking with them over the phone. Tell your friend at the dinner party. Bring it up in interviews. Just talk about it.
- Write. Write about it it in your company newsletters. Included it on your business cards and all stationery. Put it on your sign riders.
- Advertise. Include it in your print, radio, and TV ads. Advertise on other relevant websites.
- Link. Ask everyone to link to your site and hope that a few do. Make sure you are taking advantage of local business directories such as those provided by your chamber of commerce. Ask any associations to which you belong to link to your site. Ask other businesses with which you do business to link to you. They'll often do it if you provide a reciprocal link back to their site.
To pull traffic onto your website:
- Make sure you are providing good, informative copy (text) on your site. While most visitors won't read much text, search engines will.
- Build your site according to current web standards. Search engines like this, although it is often not done for various reasons.
- Put more effort into increasing your incoming links (other sites that link to you) rather than your outgoing links (which often drive traffic away from your site). Incoming links help with push traffic as well as pull traffic (because search engines like popular sites).
- Hire an SEO (search engine optimization) professional to help optimize your site for search engines.
